Spatiotemporal variability in the oxidative potential of ambient fine particulate matter in the Midwestern United States

چکیده
Abstract. We assessed the oxidative potential (OP) of both water-soluble and methanol-soluble fractions ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Midwestern United States. A large set PM2.5 samples (N=241) was collected from five sites up different environments, i.e., urban, rural, roadside, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri during May 2018–May 2019. Five acellular OP endpoints, including consumption rate ascorbic acid glutathione a surrogate lung fluid (SLF) (OPAA OPGSH, respectively), dithiothreitol (DTT) depletion (OPDTT), ?OH generation SLF DTT (OPOH?SLF OPOH?DTT, were measured for all samples. mass concentrations US as obtained these spatially homogeneously distributed, while most endpoints showed significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Seasonally, higher activities occurred summer water- extracts. Spatially, roadside site highest extracts, only occasional peaks observed at urban OP. Most similar trends between mass- volume-normalized across seasons. Comparisons two solvents (i.e., water methanol) that generally had activity levels than corresponding Site-to-site comparisons stronger correlations compared to OP, indicating better extraction water-insoluble redox-active compounds various emission sources into methanol. found weak correlation inconsistent slope values endpoints. Moreover, poor moderate intercorrelations among indicate mechanisms represented by thus demonstrate rationale analyzing multiple more comprehensive assessment

Predicting Chronic Fine and Coarse Particulate Exposures Using Spatiotemporal Models for the Northeastern and Midwestern United States
BACKGROUND Chronic epidemiologic studies of particulate matter (PM) are limited by the lack of monitoring data, relying instead on citywide ambient concentrations to estimate exposures. This method ignores within-city spatial gradients and restricts studies to areas with nearby monitoring data. This lack of data is particularly restrictive for fine particles (PM with aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 ...

15 صفحه اولGeographic Variation in the Association between Ambient Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Term Low Birth Weight in the United States
BACKGROUND Studies on the association between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and term low birth weight (LBW) have resulted in inconsistent findings. Most studies were conducted in snapshots of small geographic areas and no national study exists. OBJECTIVES We investigated geographic variation in the associations between ambient PM2.5 duri...

Ambient fine particulate matter alters cerebral hemodynamics in the elderly.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Short-term elevations in fine particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) are associated with increased risk of acute cerebrovascular events. Evidence from the peripheral circulation suggests that vascular dysfunction may be a central mechanism. However, the effects of PM2.5 on cerebrovascular function and hemodynamics are unknown. METHODS We used transcranial Doppler ultr...
